AUBURN, Calif. - The University of Denver won the NCAA Western Regional on Saturday, as five Pioneers raced into the top 10 of the men's 15K classical, and the women's team saw a 10-11-12 finish.
DU won the regional, which doubles as the RMISA Championships, with 426 total points, beating Colorado (409), Utah (391), Alaska (321), Montana State (300), Nevada (248), New Mexico (250), Western State (197) and Whitman (191).
For the second consecutive classical race, Rene Reisshauer (Erfurt, Germany) and John Stene (Trondheim, Norway) finished first and second, respectively, and Colorado's Matthew Gelso was 53 seconds behind Stene. Havard Selseng (Sogndal, Norway) was fifth, Harald Loevenskiold (Oslo, Norway) was sixth and Mike Hinckley (Anchorage, Alaska) was 10th, giving the men's team its fifth consecutive first-place finish in five classical races.
Reisshauer, Stene and Selseng will represent Denver at the NCAA Championships.
Kara LaPoint (Truckee, Calif.) was 10th, Courtney Dauwalter (Edina, Minn.) 11th and Annelise Bailly (Ruffieu, France) 12th, as the women's team finished fourth in the 10K.
LaPoint and Bailly will ski for the Pioneers at the NCAA Championships, although Dauwalter is the first alternate for the women, meaning that she may compete is another skier on any team cannot race.
"It was a very good day for us, a very good day," said DU's head Nordic coach Wolf Wallendorf. "Our women's team was solid, and the men did exactly what they are capable of doing. Now we will just prepare for the NCAA Championships in two weeks."
The men and women's giant slalom had been moved up to Thursday, but poor weather forced its cancellation, and the race will not be made up. Therefore, the final team results include only the men and women's slalom, men and women's freestyle, and the men and women's classical races.
The NCAA Championships will take place in Jackson, N.H., on Mar. 3-7.
