Sophomore Joey Murray (Denver) and freshman Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) recorded three points apiece as the University of Denver men's lacrosse team dropped Great Western Lacrosse League foe Bellarmine Friday evening, 9-7.
Gajic, junior Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) and senior Ryan Shaughnessy (Columbus, Ohio) recorded two goals apiece, while Murray had two assists.
"It was another good road win and another good conference win," head coach Jamie Munro said. "We are excited to be 2-0 in the conference going into the Notre Dame game on Sunday."
The Knights (2-9, 0-3 GWLL) jumped on the board first, scoring 50 second into game, but the Pioneers (7-5, 2-0 GWLL) ripped off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead late in the second quarter.
Bellarmine went on a 3-0 run, tying the game 4-4 to start the third quarter. Murray gave DU back the lead but that did not last long, as Bellermine scored under a minute later. Gajic's goal at 8:33 in the third sparked a 3-0 run, giving DU an 8-5 lead after three quarters of play.
Shaughnessy put DU up 9-6 in the fourth quarter. The Knights got in one more in the fourth but senior Jeb Hollingsworth (Darien, Conn.) stopped five shots in the quarter and BU could not close the gap. Hollingsworth had 13 stops in the contest.
DU led Bellarmine in ground balls, 27 to 25, and shots, 31 to 27, but BU won face-offs, 16 to 4.
