Pioneers Earn Third Place at SBC Women's Tennis Championships

DENTON, Texas - No. 46 Denver rebounded from yesterday's 4-0 loss to South Alabama to defeat Troy, 4-2, to earn third place at the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championships today at Waranch Tennis Center in Denton, Texas. The Pioneers improve to 14-9 overall, while Troy falls to 13-9.
After dropping the doubles point, DU won four of the first five singles matches to claim a third place or better finish for the fifth consecutive season. Rachel Sackmaster (Alpharetta, Ga.) tallied DU's first point with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Fabiana Gouvia at No. 5 singles. Marisa Mechem (Fredericksburg, Texas) gave DU the lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nicole Shaw at No. 6 singles. Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Stephanie Vierla at No. 3 singles. Troy made cut the lead to 3-2 with a three-set win from Annabelle Bares at No. 2 singles. DU's Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) clinched the win for DU with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Rawia El Sisi at No. 1 singles.
The Pioneers (14-9) will await a possible at-large berth in the NCAA championships. The announcement is expected to made by Tuesday, May 1.
