Sherlock Leads Ron Moore After First Round

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. The 18th-ranked University of Denver women’s golf team shot a 14-over par 302 Monday in the opening round and finished the first round of play in third place at the annual Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate held at Highlands Ranch Golf Club. Second round play was suspended due to darkness as a rainstorm interrupted play in the morning round for nearly an hour. No team was able to complete its second round and will complete it in the morning on Tuesday.

Leading the way was sophomore Stephanie Sherlock (Barrie, Ontario), who shot an opening-round 3-under par 69 to open up a three shot lead on the next closest competitor. Sherlock was the only golfer in the 96-player to finish the first round under par. She leads by three strokes over Hannah Burke and Sian Reddick of Baylor, and Rosalyn Kim of Texas Tech, who all shot even-par 72.

Next for the Pioneers was junior Dawn Shockley (Estes Park, Colo.), who shot a 1-over par 73 and finished four strokes back. Junior Sara Djos (Gothenburg, Sweden) had DU’s third-best first round, as she shot a 6-over par 78 and was nine shots back.

Rounding out DU’s scoring was junior Katie Kempter (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior Chelsea Benton (Englewood, Colo.), who both shot 10-over par 82 in the first round.

Nebraska led following the first round with a 10-over par 298 and Baylor was second at 300. DU was third at 302 and Tulsa, Mississippi and San Jose State were all tied for fourth at 303.

Play Tuesday begins at 7:45 a.m. Third and final round play will begin immediately following the conclusion of the second round.
