Box Score BOULDER, Colo. The University of Denver women’s soccer team tied Drake 1-1 in the opening game of the Colorado Classic hosted, by the University of Colorado Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (2-2-2) got on the board first 18 minutes into the first half, when senior midfielder Jenna Billingsley (Littleton, Colo.) buried a corner kick from freshman forward Lauren Cavarra (Littleton, Colo.).
“It was unfortunate not to get the winning goal,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “But we were happy with our chances and our offense today.”
Drake (1-3-1) tied the game in the 34th minute when midfielder Nikki Thaden scored after dribbling across the middle past defender Elise Mascitelli (Denver, Colo.), who lost her shoe on the play.
Denver and Drake headed into halftime locked at 1-1. However, the Pioneers outshot the Bulldogs ten to two through the opening half.
The second half saw 45 minutes of scoreless play. Billingsley and senior defender Jamie Dierberger (Littleton, Colo.) strung together a series of passes straight down the center of the field that gave the Pioneers one final shot on goal before time wound down to zero and the teams headed to overtime.
Neither team scored through two overtime periods, although DU outshot Drake 9-0 in extra time. For the game, Denver registered seven times as many shots as Drake with a game total of 28 compared to the Bulldogs’ four.
For the Pioneers, sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) recorded two saves while Drake’s Jenny Schroeder made seven for the Bulldogs.
The Pioneers next face No. 1 Stanford in the Colorado Classic in Boulder, Colo. on Sunday at 11 a.m.
