No. 47 Denver Picks up Second Win of Season

Denver, Colo. The No. 47 Pioneers picked up their second victory of the dual season with a 6-1 victory over the Penn State this afternoon at the Pinehurst Country Club.

The Pioneers began the match with two doubles victories to clinch the doubles point. Juniors Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) edged Jenny Shular and Katelyn BeVard 8-6 in No. 1 doubles. Sophomores Julia Bauregger (Kaernten, Austria) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) beat Sarah Lotto and Lauren McCarthy 8-4 in No. 2 doubles.

Denver claimed five singles wins to complete the victory. Voelker defeated Shular 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 and Schnoy beat BeVard 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Aksdal defeated Lauren Holzberg 6-3, 6-4 in No. 3 and Bauregger defeated Lotto 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4. Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) picked up the second win of her career over MaCarthy 6-4, 6-2  at No. 5 and Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) fell to Dorothy Dohanics 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

With the win, No. 47 Denver improves to 2-0 on the season. Penn State falls to 1-1.

The Pioneers travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. Friday to take on Air Force at 3:00 p.m.
