No. 26 Pioneers Down Trojans, 1-0

Box Score

DENVER The No. 26 University of Denver women’s soccer team used a goal by senior forward Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) to defeat Troy 1-0 on the road in Sun Belt Conference action Friday afternoon.

Hemmings gave Denver (12-1-1, 5-0-0 SBC) a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. She got the ball on the left side, cut across the box and struck a right-footed shot toward the near post past Troy keeper Ashley Branham.

“The team played very well as a defensive unit today,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “We failed to finish on a number of scoring opportunities, but we are very happy with any win on the road. We’re looking to build on this win heading into Sunday’s game.”

Troy (6-6-2, 1-4-0 SBC) received 13 saves from Branham as the Pioneers outshot the Trojans 21-8. Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) tallied five saves in her sixth shutout of the season for DU.

The Pioneers recorded their eighth straight win of the season, riding their longest unbeaten streak since a program record 15-game winning streak during the 2006 season from Sept. 22 to Nov. 10.

Denver is tied with Purdue for No. 26 in this week’s NSCAA national poll and received votes in both the SoccerTimes.com and Soccer Buzz national polls.

The Pioneers take on South Alabama on Sunday, Oct. 13 at noon MT. DU then returns to action at Pioneer Field for four consecutive games beginning with a 4 p.m. meeting with Arkansas State on Friday, Oct. 17.
