Pioneers Conclude Home Season with 1-0 Win

DENVER The No. 30 University of Denver women’s soccer team defeated Middle Tennessee 1-0 in its final home game of the 2008 season on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

 

Junior forward Mariah Johnston (Littleton, Colo.) scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute. Freshman midfielder Bria Beardsley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) sent in a cross from the right corner and Johnston one-timed a shot from just inside the box.

 

“We came out today and played with an incredible amount of character. After losing on Friday, we were very determined to play a full 90 minutes against a quality opponent,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “Thank-you and congratulations to our seniors for their time and effort this season and in seasons past.”

 

Denver (15-2-2, 8-1-1 SBC) and Middle Tennessee (9-7-2, 7-3-0 SBC) played to a scoreless first half. The Pioneers outshot the visiting Blue Raiders 8-3 in the first 45 minutes.

 

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Middle Tennessee keeper Kela Casiple each tallied three saves.

 

The Pioneers honored their 10 seniors, Snyder, defender Carrie Blankenbuhler (Littleton, Colo.), goalkeeper Cadie Crean (Wethersfield, Conn.), midfielder Katie Culp (Carlsbad, Calif.), forward Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.), forward Emily Hines (Albuquerque, N.M.), defender Jessi Keller (Arvada, Colo.), midfielder Sarah Martinez (Golden, Colo.), forward Dana Schonberger (Littleton, Colo.) and midfielder Marcena Winterscheidt (Denver, Colo.) prior to Sunday’s game.

 

Denver concludes its regular season on the road against North Texas on Friday, Oct. 31. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. MT.
