Pioneers Ground Warhawks in Overtime

Box Score

MONROE, La. Senior Brooke Meyer (Denver, Colo.) recorded eight points in overtime as the University of Denver women’s basketball team staved off the University of Louisiana at Monroe, 68-65, on Saturday evening at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

“We came up with big shots and big stops when we had to tonight,” head coach Pam Tanner said. “Between Brooke and Andie’s threes and Benham’s free throws, it gave us enough to weather the storm in overtime. It was a huge road win for us. Anything can happen in this league this year and getting at least a split on the road is critical.”

In overtime, Meyer hit a three-pointer to break the tie, 55-52. ULM tied the game when Jesse Carrier was fouled on a three-point shot and hit all three shots from the free throw line. Junior Andie Mason (Gilbert, Ariz.) hit a three-pointer to give Denver (10-15, 5-9 SBC) a three-point lead at 60-57 with 2:38 remaining in overtime. ULM (16-9, 9-5 SBC) got within two on a lay-in by Shannon Lloyd, but Meyer answered with a three to give DU a five point lead at 66-61 with 42 seconds remaining.

ULM scored four points within three seconds to pull within one. Meyer hit two free throws with 10 second remaining to clinch the win.

Denver led by as many as five points midway through the second half but Ashley Wallis tied the game at 45-45. DU broke off a 5-0 run, but ULM crawled back into the game and tied the game at 52-52 with eight seconds remaining after LaJeanna Howard hit one of two from the free throw line. Mason missed the shot as time expired.

In the first half, the Pioneers rebounded and found themselves up by four after Meyer hit a three. Denver went up by seven, twice, on two layups by freshman Britteni Rice (Pampa, Texas). The Warhawks got within one point twice down the stretch but Senior Alisha Godette (Colorado Springs, Colo.), had four points to close out the half giving the Pioneers the 25-21 lead at the break.

Godette, who had five of DU’s 16 points in overtime, had a game-high 19 points. Godette was DU’s leading rebounding with seven. Meyer had 12 points on the night while senior Sara Benham (Muleshoe, Texas) had 10.

Lloyd was one of three Warhawks in double figures, leading the way with 14 points.

Denver returns home to face Middle Tennessee on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
