The University of Denver mourns the loss of Kenneth Bredesen, M.D., who passed away at the age of 78 earlier this week.
Bredesen was a long-time supporter of the DU hockey team. The annual sportsmanship award for the Pioneer hockey program is named for Bredesen. Past winners of the prestigious team award include Brent Cary, Petri Gunther, Bryan Vines, Connor James, Kevin Ulanski and J.D. Corbin.
Bredesen earned his M.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1956 and served as a doctor with the Navy and Marines for three years. Following his service, Bredesen completed his residency in psychiatry and worked in private practice for over 20 years. He taught part-time at various levels in Minnesota, Colorado and Washington, D.C.
Bredesen was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Janet. Sons Scott of Greenwood Village and Tom of Centennial, daughters Laura of Aurora and Judy of Colorado Springs, grandson Brian of Highlands Ranch, and wife Phyllis survive him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at Horan & MCConaty Family Chapel in Centennial.
