DENVER, Colo. The No. 24 Pioneer women’s tennis team won its third game of the weekend today, defeating the Yale Bulldogs 7-0 at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
Denver played three close doubles matches, pulling out two victories. No. 49 Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Julia Bauregger (Klugenfurt, Austria) improved to 9-1 with their 9-7 win over Lindsay Clark an Jessica Rhee at No. 1. Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Kaja Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) fell to Stevi Petrelli and Lilian Ngyuen 8-6 at No. 3. With the doubles point on the line, Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) edged Janet Kim and Lindsey Dashiell 9-7 at No. 2 to put Denver ahead 1-0.
For the second time this weekend, the Pioneers swept singles play. Iwinski downed Silia DeFilippis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 and Askdal defeated Kim 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. No. 90 Voelker clinched the win for the Pioneers with her 6-1, 6-4 win over Rhee at No. 1 and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Nguyen 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. Schnoy beat Clark 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Bauregger edged Petrelli 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 4 to finalize the score at 7-0.
“This weekend was a great test for this team," said Voelker. "We fought hard and pushed through. We are tougher and more confident after having pulled out 3 great matches in a row. We are all looking forward to the rest of the challenges that await us this season. Vamos Pios!”
With the weekend sweep, Denver moves to 13-0 on the season. Yale falls to 3-4.
The Pioneers head to California to take on Cal Poly Sunday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m.
