Denver Edges Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. The No. 44 Pioneers won the doubles point and three singles matches en route to a 4-3 victory over No. 52 Florida Atlantic today. With the win, Denver moves to 11-3 while the Owls fall to 9-4.

 

Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) picked up Denver’s first win with their defeat of Marc Abdelnour and Eddie Majcher 8-6 at No. 2. Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) and David Simson (Vienna, Austria) downed Olivier Sajous and Daniel Vardag 8-5 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for the Pioneers.

 

Ahead 1-0, Denver grabbed the three singles wins necessary for a match victory. Landwerlen downed Vardag 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 and Niklas Persson fell to Abdelnour 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) defeated Joe Cadogan 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 and Rosen fell to Majcher 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 to put Denver ahead 3-2. No. 12 Holmstrom clinched the win for the Pioneers with his 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Sajous at No. 1 and Simson fell to Corey Smith 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to finalize Denver’s 4-3 victory.

 

"I am very pleased with the guys today,” head coach Danny Westerman said. “We beat a tough FAU team in difficult conditions at their place. I am especially happy with Andrew's play with his clinching doubles win along with David, and then getting a quick singles victory to continue our momentum. That really gave the rest of our guys a great boost.” 

 

Denver continues its road trip in Florida this Saturday, March 22, taking on Central Florida in Orlando at 9:00 a.m. MST.
