Pioneers Fall to No. 15 Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. No. 21 Denver won the doubles point defeated two ranked opponents but was unable to pull out a victory against No. 15 Fresno State today. The Pioneers lost 4-3.

Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) dropped the first match of the competition to No. 26 Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova 8-1 at No. 2, but Denver found a way to battle back. Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) downed Jacqueline Haskett and Vanessa Heroux 8-3 at No. 3. With the doubles competition tied at one apiece, Julia Bauregger (Klugenfurt, Austria) and Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) defeated Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe 8-2 at No. 1 to put the Pioneers in front 1-0.

DU struggled to put more points on the board, dropping the first three singles matches. Schnoy was defeated by Kucherkova 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Aksdal fell to No. 13 Gloria 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Voelker lost her first single match of the season, falling to No. 12 Petukhova 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1.

The Pioneers would keep hope alive, winning the next two single matches. Tirumurti and Bauregger each won their match by a score of 6-4, 6-1 to tie the contest at three each. Iwinski fought into a tie-breaker but was unable to fend off Haskett, falling 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5.

"It came down to the wire tonight against a very good team," head coach Amy Jensen said. "Bauregger and Tirumurti played their best tennis of the season and we had a great upset at No. 1 doubles. We have gained so much from this road trip to California and our continual improvement is impressive. Vamos Pios!"

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 8-5. The Pioneers fall to 15-2.

DU will take a week off before facing Colorado State on Wednesday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.
