Denver Downs UC Davis, 19-8

DENVER Junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) had three goals and three assists, helping the No. 20 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over UC Davis at Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Friday afternoon.

 

Denver (9-5, 2-0 MPSF) opened the game with a torrent of goals, including a pair each by sophomore Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and junior Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia), scoring five in the first nine minutes before UC Davis cracked the scoreboard.

 

The Aggies scored only one additional goal in the first half, as the Pioneers rolled to a 14-2 lead at halftime

 

Coyne, DU’s all-time career assists leader, recorded all six points in the first half, as the DU starters made way for the reserves after halftime.

 

The Pioneers picked up where they left off, scoring four unanswered goals to open the second half, before the Aggies stormed back with six-straight goals of their own before freshman Amy Yatsuk (Annapolis, Md.) scored her first career goal with only three seconds remaining in the contest.

 

Sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.), Morton and Sanders each had three points on two goals and an assist.

 

The Pioneers complete their home schedule against No. 19 Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m., when Denver will honor its seniors prior to the game. The contest will be webcast live on Pioneer Vision at www.denverpioneers.com.
