DU Outlasts FAU to Advance to SBC Finals

MONROE, La. - David Simson's (Vienna, Austria) three-set win at No. 3 singles helped No. 45 Denver to a 4-3 win over No. 73 Florida Atlantic in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference championships tonight.

The top-seeded Pioneers (18-5) needed over five hours to net the win to advance to tomorrow's final against No. 60 South Alabama. DU looks to avenge a 4-0 loss to South Alabama in last season's SBC finals.

DU claimed the doubles point when Simson and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) defeated Marc Adbeinour and Eddie Majcher 8-2 at No. 2 and Kalle Rosen (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Benny Althaus (Saarbrucken, Germany) defeated Joe Cadogan and Lawrence Harradine 8-6 at No. 3.

After Adam Holmstrom (Eskilstuna, Sweden) first loss of the season at No. 1 singles, Landwerlen gave DU a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Daniel Vardag at No. 5 singles.

FAU tied it at 2-2 with a win at No. 2 singles, but Althaus regained the lead for DU with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Karol Szmurlo at No. 4 singles.

After Lawrence Harradine edged Rosen in three sets at No. 6 singles, Simson delivered a come-from-behind 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 match-clinching win.

"A couple guys really stepped up today," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "David played the gutsiest match of the season, coming back from two match points down to clinch the match for us. He has one of the biggest hearts in college tennis. David has come so far this year and I am so proud of him and this entire team. It was a complete team effort today."
