UCLA Ends DU's Best Season

LOS ANGELES  No. 7 UCLA blanked No. 28 Denver 4-0 in the NCAA Regional finals at Los Angeles Tennis Center tonight. The loss ended the Pioneers’ best season since turning NCAA Division in 1998. DU won a school-best 23 matches, won its second SBC championship, advanced to its second NCAA Tournament and won its first NCAA Tournament match with yesterday’s 4-0 win over No. 41 Long Beach State.

“We ran into a strong UCLA team today,” DU head coach Amy Jensen said. “We had a terrific season and the team should be really proud of its accomplishments. We gained a lot of experience and had a lot of fun this season. Our team will be hungry to get back to the NCAA Tournament next season.”

UCLA claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2. Alex McGoodwin and Yasmin Schnack beat Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) and Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) at No. 3, and Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore bested Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) at No. 3. DU’s No. 43 tandem of Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria) were competitive in their match against the nation’s top doubles team of Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda, trailing 7-5 when the doubles point was clinched.

The Bruins recorded wins at No. 4, No. 1 and No. 6 singles to clinch its 20^th win of the season. No. 54 Andrea Remynse beat Bauregger 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 and No. 8 Zalameda defeated No. 70 Voelker 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. No. 124 McGoodwin clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tirumurti at No. 6.

Voelker will participate in the NCAA Singles Championship on May 21-26 at Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
