Sherlock Wins CN Canadian Women's Tour Stop in Winnipeg

WINNINPEG, Manitoba DU junior All-American Stephanie Sherlock (Barrie, Ont.), who finished in a tie for fifth place at the 2008 NCAA National championships  outlasted the competition, birdying the fourth and final sudden-death playoff hole to win the third stop on the 2008 CN Canadian Women’s Tour on Tuesday, held at Glendale Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg.

Sherlock was the opening-round leader following her 4-under par 68, but fired a 3-over par 75 to sit tied with Kira Meixner of Richmond, B.C. and Seema Sadekar of Las Vegas, Nevada at 1-under par for the tournament.

Meixner started the day in fourth place at 1-under par, but was one of only two players to go even-par in Tuesday’s final round and get into a three-way playoff with Sherlock and Sadekar.

After stumbling on the first playoff hole - Glendale’s par-4 18th - Meixner put herself out of contention after carding a double-bogey six after her 147 yard 7-iron approach shot found some foliage.

Sherlock and Sadekar put on an exceptional display of golf, paring the second and third playoff holes, but Sherlock birdied the fourth playoff hole after reaching the 475 yard par-5 in two, putting an end to Sadekar’s hopes of claiming her first win as a professional.

“I felt good coming into today’s round,” said Sherlock. “All I had to do was play solid and I knew I could win.”

With the win Sherlock becomes only the second amateur to win on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour after her National Amateur teammate Sue Kim became the first earlier this season. Kim, a 17-year old from Langley, B.C., has won both CN Women’s Tour events this season, solidifying herself as one of Canada’s best up-and-coming female golfers.

“I’m glad Sue wasn’t here this week,” joked Sherlock. “Although even without Sue here it was still an extremely competitive field.”

Sherlock, Kim and Meixner, all members of the National Amateur team program, have qualified for Canada’s only LPGA Tour’s stop, the CN Canadian Women’s Open held at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from August 11-17.

The last Women’s Tour  event of the season will take place July 13-15 at Camelot Golf and Country Club in Cumberland, Ontario.
