Hemmings Leads Pioneers Past Hawaii, 2-1

HONOLULU, Hawaii Senior midfielder Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) scored two goals as the University of Denver women’s soccer team defeated Hawaii 2-1 in the final game of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Monday night.

 

Hawaii (0-2-0) took a 1-0 lead over Denver (3-0-1) in the first minute of the second half after a scoreless first half. The Rainbow Wahine outshot the Pioneers five to two in the first stanza.

 

In the 57th minute, junior midfielder Lizzy Carlson (Honolulu, Hawaii) sent a through-ball to Hemmings, who then nailed a low shot to the right side of Hawaii goalkeeper Kori Lu.

 

Hemmings then netted the game-winner for DU with 13:03 remaining. She intercepted a pass back to the UH goalie and found the back of the net on an unassisted effort.

 

Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Snyder (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) made one save, while Lu made two for the Rainbow Wahine. Denver outshot Hawaii seven to six in the game, and the Pioneers took five fouls compared to Hawaii’s 16.

 

DU returns to Pioneer Field to take on Montana on Friday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. before beginning a six-game road stretch.
