DU Improves to 10-4

IRVINE, Calif. - No. 42 Denver won its second straight match with a 4-2 win over No. 47 UC Irvine in women's tennis action this afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

DU improves to 10-4 overall with the win, while UC Irvine falls to 10-5. The match started with singles play due to potential inclement weather and doubles were not played as a result.

Bhavani Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Heidi Kaloi 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot to put Denver up 1-0. Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) beat Stephanie Hammel 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 match to put the Pioneers up 2-0. Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.) put the Pioneers up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rebecca Kwan at No. 5 singles. After losses at No. 3 and No. 4, Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) clinched the team win for Denver with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Brooke Bartlett at No. 2 singles.

Voelker's and Aksdal's wins marked their 100th career collegiate singles wins. Voelker started her illustrious career at Purdue before transferring to Denver, while Aksdal has spent her entire career as a Pioneer.

"Despite tough conditions, the Pios stepped up as true would do," DU head coach Amy Jensen said. "I'd like to give special mention to Mal and Axi, who both won their 100th career singles match today. Vamos Pios!"

DU returns to action against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, March 28.
