Denver Upset 16-14 by UC Davis in MPSF Quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif. University of Denver women’s lacrosse senior midfielder Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) five goals and had three assists to become DU’s all-time goal scorer, but the Pioneers were upset 16-14 by UC Davis in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

 

Morton’s final goal of the game gave the midfielder 188 in her career, passing Steph Greenlees (2003-06) by a goal. Morton now holds Denver’s career records in goals, points (253), draw controls (159) and caused turnovers (105).

 

No. 5 seed UC Davis (5-10) jumped to an early 2-0 lead just two minutes into the game, but Morton scored three of her goals during a 4-1 DU run in the following five minutes to give Denver a 4-3 lead with 23:38.

 

The Aggies bounced back with a 6-2 stretch to give UC Davis a three-run lead with 10:16 remaining in the first half.

 

No. 4 seed Denver (10-7) got goals from Morton, junior midfielder Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and senior attacker Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) before the half ended, tying the game at 9-9 heading into the break.

 

UC Davis again jumped out early in the second half, taking a 12-10 lead with 26:13 left in the contest before sophomore midfielder Tulley Stapp (Denver, Colo.) scored twice and Coyne found the back of the net to reclaim the lead 13-12 with 15:19 remaining.

 

The Aggies scored five-straight goals to reclaim a three-goal lead with 3:02.

 

Stapp scored the third goal in her hat trick with 1:31 left, but it wasn’t enough for the Pioneers to advance.

 

In the game, Coyne had a hat trick and two assists, and Sanders added two assists to her goal.

 

Jacklyn Taylor led the Aggies with five goals, while Molly Lapolla and Christina Corsa each had two goals and two assists.

 

UC Davis advanced to face No. 1 seed Stanford in the MPSF semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m. The Pioneers conclude their season with a regular season game at Loyola on May 2 at 10 a.m.
