Mississippi Defeats Denver, 4-1, at NCAA Regionals

ATLANTA, Ga. - No. 21 Mississippi stopped No. 38 Denver, 4-1, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Georgia Tech Regional today in Atlanta. Mississippi advances to the regional final against No. 8 Georgia Tech or Jackson State and improves to 15-9. Denver ends its season with a 16-6 record.
Ole Miss picked up an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. No. 16 Karen Nijssen and Kristi Boxx earned an 8-4 win over Mallory Voelker (Dousman, Wis.) and Kyla Iwinski (Marietta, Ga.). Abigail Guthrie and Gabriela Rangel clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria) and Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) at No. 2 doubles.
The Rebels made it 2-0 when No. 71 Karen Nijssen beat Annette Aksdal (Oslo, Norway) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. DU got on the board when Schnoy topped Laura van de Stroet, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Ole Miss recorded wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, to clinch the win. DU, which earned an at-large bid out of the Sun Belt Conference, had leads in two other singles matches when the Rebels closed things out.
Guthrie defeated Bauregger 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Gabriela Rangel’s three-set victory over Iwinski at No. 5 clinched the win.
