Box Score DENVER - University of Denver women's soccer player Kelli Breidenbach (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored DU's first goal of the season and freshman goalkeeper Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) recorded her first career shutout, as the Pioneers defeated Wyoming 1-0 at Regis University Soccer Field on Saturday.
The Pioneers (1-0) were hampered by injuries in the preseason that prevented the full squad from practicing prior to Saturday's opening game.
"For not being able to play 11 versus 11 in the preseason, we were pleased with the outcome against a very worthy opponent in Wyoming," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "Almost everyone on the roster contributed to the win, and Kelli finished a very good goal."
The game remained scoreless until the 56:40 mark, when senior midfielder Lizzy Carlson (Honolulu, Hawaii) slotted a pass from the top of the box to Breidenbach on the left side of the goal. Breidenbach, a senior midfielder, buried the ball past the Cowgirls keeper to the right side of the goal.
Marking her collegiate debut, Campbell made seven saves in the shutout.
WPS Championship: DU assistant coach Katie Hooker won the inaugural Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) championship with Sky Blue FC with a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Sol in Carson, Calif., on Saturday.
Hooker, who missed DU's contest against Wyoming, has provided a spark for Sky Blue FC since signing as a free agent on June 24.
Up Next: The Pioneers next host the DU Invitational, which is slated to open the University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Aug. 28 and 30.
Denver will take on St. Mary's on Aug. 28 at 6:15 p.m., following a contest between Colorado and Illinois at 4 p.m.
On Aug. 30, DU meets Illinois at 1:15 p.m., immediately after Colorado faces St. Mary's.
