Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman midfielder Katy Van Lieshout (Boulder, Colo.) hit a game-winning goal on a free kick from 28 yards out to give the University of Denver women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over No. 13 Kansas on Friday afternoon in the Colorado College Invitational at Stewart Field.
With the game tied at 1-1 with 5:44 left in the game, Van Lieshout nailed a free kick into the upper left of the goal, just over the reach of the Kansas goalkeeper.
The Pioneers (4-1-1), who fell to KU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, handed the Jayhawks (5-1-0) their first loss of the year.
The Jayhawks struck first with 15:50 remaining in the first half. Rachel Morris made a pass just outside the top left of the box, and Emily Cressy hammered a shot into the opposite side of the goal, over the head of freshman goalkeeper Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska).
Denver tied it back up just three minutes later, when freshman forward Kaitlin Bast (Centennial, Colo.) headed in a cross from junior defender Megan Flannery (Littleton, Colo.). The assist marked the first career point for Flannery.
The Pioneers had a chance to pull ahead five minutes into the second half. Sophomore midfielder Bria Beardsley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had a corner kick, but sophomore midfielder Kari Storslett (Bakersfield, Calif.) had a shot blocked and senior midfielder Lizzy Carlson's (Honolulu, Hawaii) shot was saved.
The Pioneers conclude the Colorado College Invitational against Texas Christian on Sunday at noon.
