DU Third at Montana State Invite after Day Two

BOHART RANCH, Mont. - University of Denver women's Nordic skier Antje Maempel (Stuelzerbach, Germany) won the women's 5K freestyle race, helping keep the Pioneers in third place after the second day of the Montana State Invitational.

To go along with Maempel's 50 first-place points, sophomore Lindsay Cone (Killington, Vt.) grabbed 47 points for the Pioneers in the women's Giant Slalom as she finished in second-place behind New Mexico's Malin Hemmingsson.

On the men's side, sophomore Leif Haugen (Lommedalen, Norway) also secured 47 points for DU with a second place finish in the men's Giant Slalom, while sophomore AJ Avrin (Park City, Utah) finished in fourth-place with 41 points.

Through two days, Colorado leads the Montana State Invitational with 691 points, followed by New Mexico (631), Denver (611), Utah (539), Alaska (526), Montana State (463) and Nevada (445).

"The highlight of the meet was Antje sweeping both events, winning by large margins over the rest of the field," said head Nordic coach David Steward. "Kate Dolan and Harald Lovenskiold both made it into the top 10 with career-best skate races, and the rest of the team scored valuable points by finishing in the top 20."

DU's Nordic team finished third with 391 points, finishing behind CU (481) and New Mexico (395), while the Pioneers' Alpine team is in second place with 222 points, behind New Mexico which leads with 237 points.

Alpine begins in Big Sky, Mont., with giant slalom on Jan. 16 and slalom on Jan. 17.
