DU Falls 6-1 to No. 22 Vanderbilt

DENVER - The No. 49 Pioneer women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 22 Vanderbilt at Pinehurst Country Club today. DU falls to 1-1, while Vanderbilt improves to 2-0.
Senior Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) claimed DU's lone point with a three-set victory at No. 1 singles. Schnoy knocked off No. 29 Jackie Wu 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
" Ute played a great match and battled her way over the No. 29 player in the country," DU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "She was down a set and a break, and found a way to pull the match out."
Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria) played well in defeat at No. 2 singles. Bauregger lost 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 6-2 against No. 31 Catherine Newman.
"Julia also had a very grueling match against another top-30 player in the country," Wurtzman added. "She played her tight the whole match, and it was a well-played match."
Despite the loss, Wurtzman was pleased with the Pioneers' effort against a top-ranked team in Vanderbilt.
"Overall I felt that we competed hard against a top-20 team," Wurtzman said. "We started a bit slow in the doubles, but picked it up and were competitive in the singles. I felt Vanderbilt did not have any weak spots in their lineup, and is a very tough team. It was a great experience to play against a top SEC team. We need to take the positives away from this match, and keep working on getting better every match".
