Denver Downs Louisiana-Lafayette, 2-1

Box Score

DENVER - The University of Denver freshman midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.) had a pair of assists to lead the No. 25 Pioneers to a 2-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette at CIBER Field on Friday night.

Denver (9-2, 3-0 SBC) got on the board early, when DiGiacomo went through the top of the box and passed to sophomore forward Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.), who dribbled past a defender and the ULL goalkeeper before burying a shot into an empty net just 2:53 into the game.

"It's always nice to win," head coach Jeff Hooker said.  "We played a great beginning of the game. Kalie Vaughn scored a nice goal.  Unfortunately, after the first goal, we let our foot off of the gas pedal a little bit.  At halftime, we discussed needing a second goal, which Kristen delivered nicely to secure the win."

DiGiacomo got her second assist of the game in the 66th minute, passing to freshman forward Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) for a shot from the top right corner of the box.

Louisiana-Lafayette (6-6, 1-2 SBC) got a goal back in the 81st minute, when Chelsea Balestra followed a rebound from an Allison Baker shot.

"We were unlucky towards the end with shots that hit the post or the crossbar," Hooker commented.  "We made some mistakes that made this one a close game."

Denver outshot Louisiana-Lafayette 25-10, and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Pioneers remain at home to face Louisiana-Monroe at CIBER Field on Sunday at noon MT.
