Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - Sophomore midfielder
Katy Van Lieshout (Boulder, Colo.) and freshman forward
Cassidy Larson (Eldorado Springs, Colo.) each scored their first goals of the season to lead the Pioneers to a 2-0 victory over South Alabama (4-9-1, 2-3 SBC) on Friday afternoon.
"We had a frustrating first half, but we switched things up and put Katy Van Lieshout up closer to goal, and she ended up scoring," head coach Jeff Hooker said.
Van Lieshout held the ball from 35 yards out, beat the defenders and the goalkeeper, and struck the ball to the top of the net in the 76th minute.
"It was a smart player's goal," Hooker commented.
Larson added another goal for Denver (11-2, 5-0 SBC), her first career goal as a Pioneer. Larson took the first shot off of a rally between Denver and the South Alabama defenders and was blocked. Freshman midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.) shot off the rebound and was also blocked, but the second time was the charm for Larson, as she buried the ball after getting DiGiacomo's rebound in the 84th minute.
"The second goal by Cassidy Larson took some of the pressure off of us," Hooker said. "It was a good road win, and it was also nice to get a shutout."
Denver outshot South Alabama 8-7 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) recorded two saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Campbell has allowed just one goal in 438:30 of conference play this season for a 0.21 goals against average.
"We are trying to come out of this weekend 2-0 and control our own destiny, so to speak, to get the first place seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament," Hooker said.
The Pioneers travel to Troy, Ala., to face the Troy Trojans on Sunday at 11 a.m.
