Box Score DENVER -No. 2 Denver (21-6-4, 15-4-4 WCHA) completed its sweep of Michigan Tech with a 5-3 victory Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,875 at Magness Arena.
"There were times that we played well and times that we had to battle," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "But, the bottom line is that we were able to get a win against a team that plays the game well."
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead when Malcolm Gwilliam recorded a power play goal at 2:22. A shorthanded goal from Patrick Wiercioch (Maple Ridge British Columbia) evened the score at 8:44. Five minutes later, Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) redirected a John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) slap shot to put the Pioneers up 2-1. Tallies from Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) at 15:33 and Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) at 16:55, gave Denver a 4-1 advantage going into the first intermission.
The Pioneers tacked on another when Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta) scored on a breakaway at 11:09 in the second period. MTU scored one minute later and with one second remaining in the period to cut Denver's lead to 5-3.
Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Cody Brookwell (Calgary, Alberta) finished the game with two assists each.
Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) made 23 saves in the victory.
DU outshot MTU 40-26 and was held without a power play goal. MTU was 2-4 with the extra man.
Next, the Pioneers will travel to Minnesota State on Feb. 26-27 before returning to the Rocky Mountains to face Colorado College in a home-and-home series to end the regular season, playing at home on March 5 and in Colorado Springs on March 6.

Twelve seconds into the second period, MTU's Brett Olson received a five minute major penalty and game misconduct for hitting from behind. Nutini left the game near the end of the second period with an injury. Following the DU game, the Denver Police Department and the Denver Fire Department played an exhibition game in Magness Arena.
