Murray and Maiani Star in 4-1 Win

Box Score DENVER - Freshman Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 32 shots and Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.) had a hand in three goals and No. 2 Denver defeated Mercyhurst, 4-1, tonight at Magness Arena.

Luke Salazar (Thornton), Chris Knowlton (Colorado Springs) and Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) also scored as the Pioneers improve to 17-6-4. Mercyhurst, who got 44 saves from Ryan Zapolski and a goal from Grant Blakey, falls to 12-15-2.

DU outshot Mercyhurst, 48-33, and increased its winning streak to three games. Murray evened his record at 3-3-1 in his first start since Nov. 7.

"Adam Murray was our best player tonight and he really deserved this win," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We had a good start, but got outplayed in the third period. We'll need a much better all-around effort for 60 or 65 minutes tomorrow night at Air Force."

Maiani setup both DU goals in the first period. Knowlton netted a nifty centering feed from Maiani on the power play at 8:18 and Salazar scored his first goal of the season from Maiani at 17:59.

Maiani made it 3-0 with a quick wrister at 8:59 of the second stanza. Blakey ruined Murray's shutout bid at 15:09 of the final stanza and Colborne increased his point streak to nine games with a power-play goal 42 seconds later.

DU went 2-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. DU is 20-for-20 on the PK in its last four games.

DU plays at Air Force tomorrow night. Puck drop at Cadet Ice Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised live on FSN Rocky Mountain.

Notes: DU improves to 5-2 in nonconference action. Jesse Martin (Calgary, Alberta), Brian Gifford (Moorhead, Minn.) and William Wrenn (Anchorage, Alaska) missed the game with injuries. A Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) goal at 6:18 of the first was disallowed due to goaltender interference. Donovan was honored with a video tribute at the first TV timeout for helping Team USA capture gold at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Tournament. Maiani has 2-7=9 during his five-game point streak.
