Louisiana-Lafayette Beats Denver, 4-3, at SBCs

NEW ORLEANS - The 2009-10 season came to an end for the Denver women's tennis team. The No. 3-seeded Pioneers were upset, 4-3, by No. 6 seed Louisiana-Lafayette at the Sun Belt Conference championship this morning at the University Tennis Center in New Orleans.
Denver (8-14) led the match 3-2, but the Rajin Cajuns rallied with singles wins at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively, to advance to the SBC semifinals against North Texas on Saturday.
Louisiana-Lafayette claimed the doubles point, but DU's Ute Schnoy (Altenstadt, Germany) quickly tied the match with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Audrey Woodward.
Julie Mazinova gave UL a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Julia Bauregger (Klagenfurt, Austria).
Denver then reclaimed the lead with wins from freshman Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) and senior Lorinda Boothman (Naples, Fla.). Isberg beat Mia Gordon 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 and Boothman beat Milou Israel 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
UL gained a 3-3 tie with a 7-6(5), 7-6(1) win from Briggitt Marcovich over Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) at No. 3 and won the match with Tara Vasovic's 6-4, 6-1 win over Mikele Smith (Denver) at No. 6.
Schnoy, who is ranked No. 86, is expected to participate in the NCAA Singles Championship and doubles championship with Bergner. The DU duo is currently ranked No. 56.
