Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Bast (Littleton, Colo.) scored two goals and sophomore forward Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.) had a goal and assist, as the University of Denver women's soccer team knocked off Washington State 3-1 at the Gonzaga University Tournament on Friday afternoon.
"We gave up a goal early on a nice combination, and they gave us some trouble with the way they played in the first 15 minutes, but after that we settled down and figured it out," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We were very good executing in the second half, and I was pleased with a very solid performance."
Denver (4-1) out-shot Washington State 12-7 in the game and held the Cougars (2-5) without a corner kick.
Washington State took an early lead when Micaela Castain scored on a rebounded shot from Emma Stolz in the seventh minute.
Vaughn tied the game in the 30th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Katy Van Lieshout (Boulder, Colo.) during a scramble at the goal line.
After Washington State was called for a foul in the box, Bast converted the ensuing penalty kick for the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute.
In the 79th minute, Vaughn dribbled up the left side and pulled the defense toward her before crossing to Bast, who blasted a shot just inside the far post from 18 yards out.
This marked the second game this week that Bast has scored two goals after netting a pair against Drake on Monday. Vaughn also had two goals and an assist against Drake.
The Pioneers next will take on host Gonzaga at the Gonzaga University Invitational on Sunday.
