Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Sophomore forward
Kaitlin Bast (Centennial, Colo.) and freshman midfielder
Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.) scored to lead the Pioneers (8-2, 2-0 SBC) to a 2-0 victory over Western Kentucky (3-4-2, 1-1 SBC) on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.) dribbled toward goal, beating the defenders and goalkeeper, and slipped the ball to Bast, who hammered it into the net in the 45th minute.
"We had good timing from Kaitlin and a great individual effort from Kalie," head coach Jeff Hooker commented.
Denver capped the win in the 77th minute when freshman forward Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) held the ball in the top of the box and faked out the defenders before flicking it to DiGiacomo, who struck in the corner of the goal.
"I thought we did a great job today," Hooker said. "We changed our starting line-up and played 18 players today. This was very much of a team weekend in that some of our players got to contribute more than usual. We beat two quality opponents so it's a great start to the conference season."
Denver outshot Western Kentucky 13-11 and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) recorded six saves and her second consecutive shutout.
The Pioneers return home to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, Oct. 1 and Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday, Oct. 3 at CIBER Field.
