Pioneers Defeat CU 2-1 in Final Seconds

DENVER - Freshman Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.) scored on a penalty kick with 57 seconds left in the game to give the University of Denver women's soccer team (2-1) a 2-1 victory over the University of Colorado in the second game of the Denver Invitational on Saturday night at CIBER Field.

Denver took an early lead when freshman Jessy Battelli (Golden, Colo.) headed in a DiGiacomo corner kick just seven minutes into the game. CU equalized at 37:55 when Hayley Hughes' shot deflected off of a Pioneer defender.

The Pioneers, who were outshot 9-2 in the first half, held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the second half.

"We showed a lot of heart tonight," said head coach Jeff Hooker. "CU had a lot of chances in the first half. In the second half, we were able to turn it around; we defended better and worked harder."

Sophomore Lara Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) made six saves on the night, earning her second win of the season.

In the first game of the day, Drake University used two first-half goals to seal a 2-1 victory over UNLV and advance to the championship game of the Denver Invitational against DU on Monday at 12:15 p.m. at CIBER Field.

Megan Fisher capitalized on a penalty kick in the ninth minute to give Drake a 1-0 lead. Fisher assisted on a Paige Dusek goal at 44:36 as the Bulldogs went into half time up 2-0.

UNLV mounted a comeback in the second half, outshooting Drake 13-1. In the 78th minute, Amanda Forrester scored from the top of the box to bring the Rebels within one, but Drake held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Denver Invitational concludes on Monday as CU plays UNLV in the consolation game at 10 a.m. Denver will face Drake in the championship game at 12:15 p.m.
