Box Score MIAMI - As a team runs through conference play unbeaten over an extended period of time, they enter each match with a target on their back. FIU became the first team to hit the target on the back of the University of Denver women's soccer team in the last 22 Sun Belt Conference matches, as a late goal propelled the Golden Panthers to a 1-0 win on Sunday.
"It was a disappointing loss today," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "We couldn't put it all together today. If you don't score, you can't win, and we did a poor job of finishing the chances that we did create this afternoon."
The Pioneers (13-3-0, 7-1-0 SBC) went 553 minutes without allowing a goal before the streak was snapped in the 87th minute on the Golden Panthers (9-6-1, 6-1-1 SBC) breakthrough. Chelsea Leiva got in behind the Pioneers defense and played a cross to the back post to Johanna Volz's who slotted her third goal of the season.
FIU knocked off both of the unbeaten SBC teams entering the weekend, North Texas and Denver, with matching 1-0 results. Despite the loss, the Pioneers still hold their own destiny in winning their second straight regular season title, and their third in the last four seasons.
Denver will return to CIBER Field for its last home match of the season, taking on Arkansas State on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT. A trio of seniors - forward Taylor Bailey (Loveland, Colo.), midfielder Bria Beardsley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and defender Kari Storslett (Bakersfield, Calif.) - will all be recognized.
