MADISON, Wis. - University of Denver freshman forward
Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) was named WCHA Rookie of the Year today by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Sophomores Drew Shore (Denver) and Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) joined Zucker on the All-WCHA Second Team, while freshman Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) and David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) joined Zucker on the All-WCHA Rookie Team.
DU also landed 16 members on the All-WCHA Academic Team. David Carle (Anchorage, Alaska), Jon Cook (Denver), Nate Dewhurst (Johnston, Iowa), Donovan, Dustin Jackson (Omaha, Neb.) John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.), Anthony Maiani (Shelby Township, Mich.), Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta), Chris Nutini (Centennial, Colo.), Kyle Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta), Shawn Ostrow (Calgary, Alberta), Paul Phillips (Darien, Ill.), Josh Rosenholtz (Ridgefield, Conn.), John Ryder (Colorado Springs), Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) and Drew Shore earned 3.0 GPAs or higher during the last three quarters. Cook, Jackson, Lee, Martin, Nutini, Kyle Ostrow, Ryder and Salazar are repeat selections.
Zucker led all WCHA rookies with 20 goals and 36 points in WCHA league games. He ranked second in goals and third in points among all players during league games. Zucker has five-game winning goals and ranks second nationally with 1.12 points in all games. He earned AHCA National Rookie of the Month honors for February and tallied 14 points (4g, 10a) during a career-best, nine-game point streak from Jan. 14-Feb. 25.
Shore has tallied a career-high 43 points (22g, 21a) and tied for fourth in WCHA league scoring with 34 points (15g, 19a). He led the WCHA with a +29 rating in league games and has 15 points (8g, 7a) during his current career-best 10-game point streak. Shore was named AHCA National Player of the Month for November and was the MVP of the Denver Cup Classic. Shore has 12 multi-point games and is an Inside College Hockey National Player of the Week and Red Baron WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honoree.
Donovan tied for fourth in scoring among WCHA defensemen in league games with 21 points (4g, 17a). He leads Denver in blocked shots (84), penalties (30) and PIMs (60). Donovan was a member of the All-WCHA Rookie Team last season.
Brittain led WCHA rookies in wins (13), goals against average (2.40) and save percentage (.920) in league games. He leads the WCHA in saves percentage (.922) and ranks third in goals against average (2.28) and save percentage (.922) for all games. Brittain is a two-time Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honoree.
Makowski ranked second among rookie in points in all games (23) and league games (18). He has four power-play goals and one shorthanded goal this season.
No. 2 seed Denver (21-10-5) hosts No. 11 seed Minnesota State (14-16-6) in the best-of-three WCHA Playoffs on March 11-13.
Notes: Zucker is the ninth Pioneer to earn league Rookie of the Year honors, joining George Kirkwood (1960), Jack Wilson (1961), Keith Magnuson (1967), George Morrison (1969), Craig Redmond (1983), Dave Shields (1987), Rick Berens (1988) and Paul Stastny (2005). The Pioneers placed a program-best three players on the All-WCHA Rookie Team. DU's three All-WCHA second-team selections were the most since 1978 when Lex Hudson, Perry Schnarr and Greg Woods were named to the team. DU has landed a player on the All-WCHA Rookie Team for four consecutive seasons and six of the last seven seasons.
