Box Score GREEN BAY, Wis. - Denver's NCAA Frozen Four bid ended with a 6-1 loss to top-ranked North Dakota at the Midwest Regional final today at Green Bay's Resch Center.
Denver ends its season with a 25-12-5 record and fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. North Dakota (32-8-3) advances to the NCAA Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minn., on April 7.
Mario Lamoureux, Evan Trupp, Brett Hextall, Brock Nelson, Brad Malone and Jake Marto scored, and Aaron Dell got the win with 26 saves.
WCHA Rookie of the Year Jason Zucker (Las Vegas) scored for Denver and freshman Sam Brittain (Calgary, Alberta) capped an outstanding season with 26 saves.
Lamoureux staked North Dakota to a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal from Chay Genoway at 14:37, but Zucker answered when his shot from behind the goal banked off Dell with one second left in the period. Luke Salazar (Thornton, Colo.) and David Makowski (Wildwood, Mo.) earned assists on the goal.
North Dakota regained a 2-1 lead when Trupp buried a rebound goal at 7:06 of the second period. Matt Frattin and Malone assisted on the goal.
Hextall made it 3-1 with a power-play goal from Genoway and Nelson at 19:06 of the second period.
Denver's fatigue set in during the third period and North Dakota iced the game with goals from Nelson, Malone (empty-net) and Marto (power play).
The Fighting Sioux outshot Denver 32-27 and went 2-for-7 on the power play. Denver was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.
DU's Zucker and Matt Donovan (Edmond, Okla.) were named to the Midwest Regional all-tournament team.
Notes: DU falls to 27-18 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneer senior class finished their career with 101 wins. The Denver Hockey Awards Evening is scheduled for Friday, April 22.
