Pioneers Finish Third at Cal Quad Meet

Berkeley, Calif. - The University of Denver gymnastics team posted a score of 194.625 and finished in third place at the Cal Quad Meet in Berkeley, Calif. Denver finished behind No. 7 Oregon State (197.000) and No. 2 Stanford (196.500), and ahead of host Cal (194.175).

Junior Brianna Springer (Arvada, Colo.) posted an impressive 39.300 to finish third in the all-around. She never scored less than a 9.800 in any event, showing consistent excellence throughout the meet.

"We saw an improvement today," said head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. "We got a higher road score, which was one of our goals. Every event was solid except for balance beam, and we'll be disciplined and persistent on that event every day in practice. When it counts, we'll get it done."

Denver started strong in the first rotation on floor exercise, posting a team score of 49.025. Freshman Kaitlin Moorhead (Palo Alto, Calif.) recorded a career-high 9.825 and junior Louise Mercer (Nottingham, England) led DU with a 9.850. The Pioneers headed into the second rotation in second place behind Oregon State (49.400) and ahead of Stanford (48.775) and Cal (48.025).

Denver headed to the vault in the second rotation and inked a team score of 48.850. Springer led the Pioneers with a 9.850 and freshman Moriah Martin (Lake Mary, Fla.) added a 9.825 to top the DU vault scorecard.

In the third rotation, the Pioneers posted a 48.975 on uneven bars. Springer and fellow junior Louise Mercer (Nottingham, England) each posted scores of 9.850 to lead Denver, while senior Annamari Maaranen (Tampere, Finland) added a 9.800.

DU finished with a 47.775 on balance beam in the final rotation. Springer and freshman Jorie Hall (Denver, Colo.) each recorded scores of 9.800 to lead Denver.

Makayla Stambaugh of Oregon State took the all-around title with a score of 39.525.

Next up, Denver will return home to host No. 12 Arkansas on Saturday, Mar. 12 at 6 p.m. MT in Hamilton Gymnasium.
