Denver Upends UALR

MOBILE, Ala. - No. 7 seed Denver scored an impressive 4-0 win over No. 10 seed UALR Thursday morning at the Mobile Tennis Center in the first round of the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship.

DU (7-13) jumped out to the early lead by capturing the doubles point backed by wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.  The Pioneer pair of Sophia Bergner (Schechen, Germany) and Steffi Rath (Hochst, Austria) vaulted past UALR's team of Yana Kakovkina and Rachel Pierce with an 8-3 win on the No. 1 court.  Minutes later the doubles point was sealed with an 8-4 victory on the No. 3 court by freshmen Caroline Schnell (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Natalie Dunn (Fort Collins, Colo.) over Natalia Garay and Viktoriva Plyuta.

Rath put DU up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Graray at the No. 5 court.  Dunn then cruised past Andrea Steen-Rosten 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot and Emma Isberg (Tyreso, Sweden) clinched the final point for DU with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rebecca Van Den Houte on the No. 3 court.

With the win, Denver advances to the second round to play No. 2 seed Louisiana-Monroe on Friday. Match time is 8 a.m. MT at the Mobile Tennis Center.
