DU Claims Third Sun Belt Shootout Title

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Denver capped an outstanding weekend of tennis with a 4-3 win over DePaul for its third Sun Belt Shootout title.
Denver improved to 7-12 after beating Louisiana-Lafayette, Florida Atlantic and DePaul in the shootout. The Blue Demons place second and fall to 14-8.
Freshman Alex Clinkenbeard (Loveland, Colo.) capped an unbeaten weekend with the championship-clinching win over Filip Dzanko in three sets at No. 5 singles.
"I was really happy with he way the boys came out after a terrible doubles point," DU head coach Danny Westerman said. "We adjusted to the windy conditions much better once the singles started. Alex has come a long way his freshman year, and today was the reward to be able to clinch the match. We are starting to put things together at the most important time."
Enej Bonin (Koper, Slovenia), Jens Vorkefeld (Ostercappeln, Germany) and Andrew Landwerlen (Las Cruces, N.M.) also posted singles wins for Denver.
The win was also Denver's second against a ranked opponent this season.
Denver hosts South Alabama on April 8.
