ALBUQURQUE, N.M. - The University of Denver women's golf team finished 15-over par and tied for second place at the 32nd Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Monday.
"I am pleased with the team's effort today," said head coach Sammie Chergo. "We came up a little short of our first win, but we battle hard. There were some tough pins out there, but we learned a lot and look forward to our next chance."
Junior Kelly Drack (Melbourne, Fla.) and freshman Rachael Watton (Edinburgh, Scotland) both finished at two-over par (73-70-78=221, 76-71-74=221) and were tied for ninth, respectively at the end of the two-day, 54-hole tournament on the University of New Mexico's 6,187 yard, par-73 Championship Course.
The Pioneers posted an 11-over par 303 on the final day and along with TCU (295-294-302=891), finished four strokes behind tournament champion, Baylor (294-298-295=887).
Sophomore Tonje Daffinrud (Tonsberg, Norway) was six-over par for the tournament and tied for 23rd place (79-71-75=225). Senior Sarah Faller (Galway, Ireland) tied for 24th, finishing seven-over par (75-75-76=226) and freshman Mieke Heyns (Lethbridge, Alberta) tied for 70th place with a 16-over par 235 (77-78-80).
Denver was in second place after rounds of 301 and 287 on Sunday.
The Pioneers travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for their next tournament, taking part in the Stanford Intercollegiate Oct. 14 and 15.
