Pioneers Fall to Utah State in Five Sets

LOGAN, Utah - The University of Denver volleyball team (8-9, 2-5 WAC) fell 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-7) to Utah State (12-5, 7-1 WAC) Saturday evening in Western Athletic Conference action at the Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.
Junior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished with a game-high 22 kills, followed by classmate Alex Turgeon (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) with 11.
"I was proud of the way our team competed tonight against the top team in the WAC," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "We put ourselves in a position to compete and win the match but fell short in the fifth set. Colleen had a monster match offensively and Alex Turgeon played a great match off the bench. We will take positives away and get better."
Sophomore Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) tallied a team-high 17 digs, while fellow sophomore Samantha Berger (Omaha, Neb.) posted 13. Sophomores Bailey Karst (Aurora, Colo.) and Cassie Ronda (Chandler, Ariz.) finished with 10 digs apiece. Karst also tallied 47 assists.
Rachel Orr topped the Aggies with 15 kills, followed by Shay Sorensen's 12.
Up next, the Pioneers return home to take on Texas State on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed live on Pioneer Vision.
