Pioneers Take Down Bobcats 3-2 on the Road

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Led by a combined 47 kills from senior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and juniors Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Alex Turgeon (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.), the University of Denver volleyball team defeated the Texas State Bobcats 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 16-14) on Saturday afternoon from Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas.
The win improves the Pioneers to 16-12 on the season, 9-8 in Western Athletic Conference action. The loss drops the Bobcats to 14-14 on the season, 9-8 in league play.
"We may not have played and executed as well as we had wanted to, but at the end of the day we competed well and won," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "We will take the momentum of this win into our match with Seattle this week, fix some aspects of our systems and connections, and prepare for our conference tournament."
King led the way for the Pioneers with 21 kills, bringing her season total to 328, while Kingsley tallied 16 kills with six blocks. The middle blocker is second on the team for the season with 264 kills and leads the way with 168 blocks.
Turgeon rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 kills, while sophomore setter Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) posted a career-high 53 assists and 10 digs. Carroll also chipped in a career-high eight kills.
Sophomore Kate Acker (Waukesha, Wis.) led the way defensively with 22 digs, while freshman Michele Swope (Orlando, Fla.) finished with 19 digs to go along with nine kills. Sophomore Samantha Berger (Omaha, Neb.) finished with a career-high 14 digs.
The Pioneers return home to host their final match of the season. Denver welcomes Seattle to Hamilton Gymnasium on Thursday, Nov. 15 for a 7 p.m. match. Fans can follow the match live on Pioneer Vision or via Live Stats.
