RESTON, Va. - The University of Denver Jr. Pioneers Peewee AA Hockey Team posted a 6-2 win over Anaheim to capture the USA Hockey U12 Tier II National Championship Sunday in Reston, Va.

The Jr. Pioneers, which are coached by John Kopperud and led by Youth Hockey Director Jamie Herrington, finished the tournament with an impressive 6-0 record. Competing in the top level 3A bracket, the Jr. Pioneers defeated the Toledo Cherokee (Ohio), St. Lawrence Thunder (New York), Boulder Bison (Colorado), Tampa Scorpions (Florida), Ramapo Saints (New Jersey) and Anaheim Wildcats (California).

The journey to the National Championship game came with a lot of hard work for Coach Kopperud's team. The Pioneers battled to semifinal losses at many big tournaments this season, including the Warrior Invitational, the Silver Stick Nationals and the prestigious Quebec International Tournament.
