OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Denver Pioneers split on the final day of the Bluejay Invitational, hosted by Creight University at the D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. The Pioneers (3-3) started out the day with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) sweep of Syracuse and then followed it up with a 3-1 (23-25, 10-25, 25-18, 14-25) loss to the Bluejays.
Senior Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 18 kills and eight blocks through the two matches, while junior Colleen King (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) added 14 kills and finished with five blocks. King was named to the Bluejay Invitational All-Tournament team.
"While we didn't come away with two wins on the day, we were able to compete at a high level at times in both matches," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "We saw glimpses of the team we can be in the Creighton match and we can build on that. We need to get comfortable competing in pressure situations. There will be many of them this season."
Also finishing with double-digit kills for the day was freshman Michele Swope (Orlando, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Cassie Ronda (Chandler, Ariz.), who finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Sophomore Frances Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) led the way with 55 assists, while senior Lyndi Johnson (Flower Mound, Texas) posted 27 digs.
In the Pioneers' win over the Orange, Swope led the way with nine kills, while Kingsley finished with eight kills and four blocks. King posted four blocks while junior Brea Muhle (Columbus, Neb.) tallied five blocks and five kills. Johnson finished the match with 13 digs and Carroll registered 27 assists.
The Pioneers remain on the road next weekend, traveling to Washington, D.C., to take part in the All-Armed Forces Tournament at the Pentagon. Denver faces The Citadel on Friday at 12:30 p.m., followed y Navy on Saturday at 7 a.m. and Army at 11 a.m.
