CLEVELAND, Ohio – University of Denver senior volleyball player Faimie Kingsley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named one of 11 finalists for the prestigious John McLendon Postgraduate Scholarship, it was announced today by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
Kingsley joins Dominique Alexander (Ohio State) Charlotte Armstead (Norfolk State), William Baggett (Baylor), Dymond Bush (Hampton), Stacy Dally (Augustana), Jasmine Edwards (Rutgers), Christopher Jones (North Carolina Central), Oscar Ramirez Jr. (Texas A&M), Tracie Sneed (Jacksonville) and Aron White (Georgia).
Kingsley finished her career with 930 kills, a .329 attack percentage, 55 block solos, 437 block assists, 492 total blocks and a 1.32 blocks per set average. She ranks first in the DU all-time record books with a .329 attack percentage, second all-time in block assists (437) and total blocks (492), while ranking fourth in blocks per set (1.32). She was named First Team All-Conference (Sun Belt and WAC) twice and earned four Conference Player of the Week honors during her career. Academically, Kingsley was named to the SBC Commissioner’s List twice for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Most recently, Kingsley was named to the All-WAC Academic Team.
The above mentioned finalists names were forwarded to the John McLendon Memorial Minority Blue Ribbon Committee by the John McLendon Awards Selection Committee for final consideration. The Selection Committee consists of several respected minority athletics directors and administrators, including past McLendon scholarship recipients.
The John McLendon Memorial Minority Blue Ribbon Committee, who are responsible for selecting the recipients for the McLendon Scholarship include the following individuals: Troy Arthur, director of institutional performance program, NCAA; Alvin Attles, formerly of the Golden State Warriors and 2009 McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame inductee; Bart Byrd, associate athletics director for student-athlete services, Baylor University and 2013 N4A President; Charles Davis, lead color analyst, FOX Sports; Byron Daub, director of brand sponsorships, Capital One; Wayne Embry, senior basketball advisor to the president, Toronto Raptors and 2007 Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame inductee; Stan Johnson, executive director, MOAA; Joanna McLendon, McLendon fund administrator; Cory Moss, senior vice president and managing director, Collegiate Licensing Company – an IMG Company; Claire Van Ummersen, vice president, Office of Women in Higher Education; Gene Washington, former director of football development, NFL and 2009 Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame inductee; Bob Watson, former vice president of on-field operations, Major League Baseball and 2009 Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame inductee; and Bruce Wimbish, senior marketing and communications manager, Greater Columbus Sports Commission.
The winners will each receive a $10,000 scholarship to be used towards postgraduate studies in athletics administration. Funding for the scholarship program has been provided in part by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA); Capital One; the Cleveland Cavaliers; Major League Baseball (MLB); the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A); the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC); the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA); the National Basketball Association (NBA); the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA); and Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Minorities (as defined by federal guidelines) who intend to pursue a postgraduate degree in athletics administration are eligible for these scholarships. Students were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and have demonstrated leadership qualities on an institutional or community level.
