FORT COLLINS, Colo. –Paced by two under-par performances from senior Oskar Arvidsson (Karna, Sweden) and junior Victor Doka (Zurich, Switzerland), the University of Denver men’s golf team erased an 11-stroke deficit to defeated tournament hosts Colorado State for the Ram Masters Invitational Title.
The win is the first season-opening victory for the Pioneers since joining Division I in 1999-00.
“I am extremely proud of this team,” said men’s golf head coach Eric Hoos. “They stayed committed to the game plan even when they made a mistake. They were focused and fought back, while staying calm, composed and competitive. For that all to come in the first tournament of the season, with little practice and classes starting, I am very pleased.”
The Pioneers found themselves in seventh place entering the final round of play on Tuesday morning and used three under-par performances to finish one stroke ahead of CSU at the par-70, 7,121 yard Fort Collins Country Club.
Arvidsson shot a tournament best six-under par 64 to tie for first and Doka jumped up the leaderboard with a 5-under par 65 to finish in fifth place.
“Oskar and Victor played tremendous for us,” said Hoos, “They were extremely focused, they were confident in their swings and their short game and putting was solid for both men.”
Senior Ole Ramsnes (Stavanger, Norway) finished strong with a 1-under par final round moving up the leaderboard from 47th place to a top-25 finish.
Sophomore Arti Edelman (Geneva, Switzerland) turned in a score of 78 in the final round to finish with a 223 for the tournament, while freshman Pat Frodigh (Westwood, Mass) carded a 74 for a tournament total of 227.
CSU finished with a team total of 848, followed by Nevada (854), Louisville (855) and Wichita State (856) to round out the top-five teams.
Up next, the Pioneers head to Erie, Colo., to take part in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
