Hamilton Becomes DU's All-Time Points Leader

Box Score

LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 14 ranked University of Denver women’s soccer team notched its first loss of the season, falling to the University of Nebraska 2-1 on Sunday afternoon from Nebraska Soccer Field in Lincoln, Neb. Despite the loss, senior Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) became the Pioneers’ all-time points’ getter as she scored the lone goal for Denver, bringing her career total to 117.

Hamilton surpasses Annette Wagner (1989-92), who tallied 116 career points.

“This is a difficult loss for our team,” said head coach Jeff Hooker. “After a scoreless first half we made some adjustments and the team responded very well. We kept possession and were able to break them down for the first goal of the game.”

The loss is the first for the Pioneers this season and brings their record to 7-1-1 overall, while the Cornhuskers improve to 6-2-1.

Hamilton put the Pioneers on the board first in the 73rd minute as she converted a pass from senior Cassidy Larson (Eldorado Springs, Colo.). The Cornhuskers answered 12 seconds later as Katie Kraeutner scored off a cross from Jordan Jackson.

Nebraska made it 2-1 with 78:49 on the clock as Jaycie Johnson scored of a cross from Samantha Areman.

“What has been our strength all year has been keeping the lead and finish out games,” Hooker said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to accomplish that today in giving up two goals in five minutes. We will have to get back to what we have done well all year to earn our next win.”

Senior Jessy Battelli (Golden, Colo.) took two shots, while junior Nikki Pappalardo (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Shannen Johnson (Golden, Colo.) both attempted one. Freshman goalie Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) made five saves, while allowing only two goals for the second time this season.

Denver remains on the road, traveling to Provo, Utah, to take on BYU on Thursday, Sept. 26 for a 7 p.m. MT game. The Pioneers then travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., to take on UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 12 p.m. MT.
