DENVER – The University of Denver women’s soccer senior midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.) scored the lone goal, as the Pioneers defeated Tennessee-Martin 1-0 in the Denver Invitational at CIBER Field on Friday night.
The victory improves Denver’s record to 5-0-0 for the first time in the program’s existence.
"We played well today. A lot of things that we worked on in practice translated into the game," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "But there are a lot of teams playing better than we are that aren't 5-0. We have to grow a little bit more if we're going to be more successful."
In the 71st minute, DiGiacomo rebounded her initial shot after it bounced off the goalkeeper’s hands, firing the ball into the back of the net from seven yards out to break the scoreless tie.
The Crimson and Gold dominated the shot totals (19-6) in the match and took all nine of the game’s corner kicks.
In the first half, DiGiacomo alone matched the whole Skyhawks team in shots and shots-on-goal with four and one, respectively, in the opening 45 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) made three saves to record DU’s third shutout of the season.
In the first game of the night, Colorado edged Alabama 1-0 in overtime, when freshman Brianna Hooks found the back of the net in the 97th minute.
The Denver Invitational continues on Sunday. Colorado will meet Tennessee-Martin in the first match at 11 a.m. MT, followed by Denver against Alabama at 1:15 p.m. MT.
