Denver Tops Alabama 2-0, Extends Win Streak to Six

Box Score

DENVER – The University of Denver women’s soccer players Nikki Pappalardo (San Diego, Calif.) and Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) both scored to give the Pioneers a 2-0 victory over Alabama in the Denver Invitational at CIBER Field on Sunday afternoon.

The win extended DU’s winning streak to six games, the best start in program history.

"It was a good start for us. We had some good chances early. I thought we did a good job of putting some good pressure on them," head coach Jeff Hooker said. “Overall we still need to get better.  We need to have a little better movement on the ball and play a little better against Colorado next Sunday.”

Pappalardo scored from 14 yards out off an assist from Jacey Birtcher (Temecula, Calif.) in the 19th minute.

The Pioneers (6-0-0) iced the win in the 71st minute. Shelby Wesley (Aurora, Colo.) passed the ball to Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.), who turned and chipped a short pass to Hamilton in front of the goal. Hamilton, who put 5-of-8 shots on goal,  scored from seven yards.

Denver dominated 20-6 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks over Alabama (1-4-0).

Freshman goalkeeper Cassidy Rey (Arcadia, Calif.) made three saves to record her second shutout of the weekend and DU’s fourth shutout this season.

In the first game of the day, Colorado routed Tennessee-Martin 4-1.

The Pioneers next head to Boulder, Colo., to take on Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. MT. Both Denver and CU are 6-0-0 to start the season for the first time in either program’s history.
