Oct. 1, 2014 DENVER - University of Denver men's sophomore golfer Petter Mikalsen has been named the Summit League player of the month for September.
Mikalsen had a pair of top five finishes in both the Ram Masters Invitational and the Mark Simpson Invitational.
"Petter played steady and with lots of confidence the first two events," said Denver head coach Erik Billinger. In the Ram Masters in Fort Collins, Colorado, Mikalsen finished fifth overall at 3-over par on the Fort Collins Country Club course. His even par for the third round helped the Pioneers grab third place in the tournament.
At the Mark Simpson Invitational, Mikalsen shot 8-under par and made a run at the individual lead before finishing in second place in the weather shortened event. The young man from Stavanger, Norway is only scratching the surface of his potential.
"Petter is serious about his game," Billinger said. "His commitment will allow him to get as good as he wants during his collegiate career and after college as a professional."
Stoic and focused on the course and in the classroom, Mikalsen has an easygoing demeanor off the course and away from the books.
"Petter has a great sense of humor," Billinger added. "He is very respectful and a joy to coach."
And he's the Summit League golfer of the month for September. In all probability it won't be his last Summit League honor.
It was also a clean sweep for Denver golfers. Isabel Southard of the DU women's team also grabbed Summit League player of the month honors. - JOIN THE DENVER PIONEER NATION -
